PN Program Curriculum
The typical curriculum for the Practical Nursing Student is a three (3) semester sequence. A minimum of 50 credit hours is required for the certificate program in Practical Nursing. Nursing courses may be taken only after acceptance into the Practical Nursing program. Clinical nursing courses begin the first semester and continue through the final semester. Completion of the clinical component is a requirement for the successful completion of the Practical Nursing program.
Fall Semester
The student spends the first semester in the classroom for approximately 10 lecture hours each week, in nursing laboratory for a total of 88 hours during the semester, and a total of 16 hours in the clinical area during the semester. Students should expect to spend at least 26 and up to 52 hours PER WEEK outside of class studying, preparing for class, and doing homework assignments.
Spring/Summer Semesters
The last two semesters of the program are focused on classroom instruction and clinical practice. In spring, there are approximately 14 lecture hours per week and 256 clinical hours during the semester. Students should expect to spend at least 38 and up to 76 hours PER WEEK outside of class studying, preparing for class, and doing homework assignments.
In summer, there are approximately 15 lecture hours per week and 160 clinical hours during the semester. Students should expect to spend at least 28 hours and up to 56 hours PER WEEK outside of class studying, preparing for class, and doing homework assignments.
Recommended Course Sequence
Prerequisites: The following prerequisites are required for admission into the PN Program and must be completed prior to starting the program:
- Completion of college-level Human Anatomy/Lab with a “C” or above; and
- MTH010 Fundamentals of Math or equivalent or higher with a minimum grade of “C” or placement score for MTH142 Quantitative Reasoning or higher.

A grade of “C” or better must be obtained in all required courses.
There is a clinical fee assessed per credit hour for each nursing course with a lab or clinical component.
